Together, Small Acts Of Kindness Are More Powerful Than One

Together, Small Acts of Kindness Are More Powerful Than One Together, we recently mourned the loss of Bill Haggerty and offered our condolences to the Haggerty family. Together, as a united force, we acted on empathy and showcased community support by graciously donating $3,400 to Bill's memorial fund as a token to his family.   Together, a group of friends priortized the well being of Bill's younger sibling and one of my best friends, Dan Haggerty. A getaway in the mountains offered him a moment of peace by riding his late brother's board on the slopes. Together, we offered strength and solace to the Haggerty family during this tragic time. Together, our intrinisc motivation to uplift the Haggertys led to small acts of kindness that had a multiplier effect to the love and support we provided. Now more than ever, the world is desperate for good deeds. Share your good deed and be the catalyst for others to follow. Photo of Dan Haggerty with Bill Haggerty's snowboard Phot...

Mind, Body, Soul & COVID-19

Since the start of the pandemic, I've made it a point to prioritize wellness, which is not only personally rewarding but also enables me to stay balanced for my family in these unprecedented times.  Over the past 4 months, I've lost 20lbs and improved my quality of life by refining my nutrition and fitness routine. The most rewarding part is becoming the motivational catalyst for Mahera Khanshab to take on a similar feat. Much of my recent lifestyle transformation can be attributed to my trainer, Nick Bardsley. Werkdout  training was born out of the idea that he could help more people stay active during the pandemic lockdown by providing live home workouts free of charge for 3 months. He has since established his business and offers daily virtual workouts and nutrition coaching. The pandemic has created an imbalance of routine and volatility of our emotions. The best way I know how to combat life's uncertainty is to nurture the mind, body and...

A Lost Wallet Mystery Leads To Good Deeds

On May 18th, I found a purse, ironically in the same location where Mahera Khanshab recently lost hers, and since hers was gracefully returned, I was eager to pay it forward. After a quick search on Google, I had a brief conversation with the owner and arranged to meet. When I first greeted her, she had a grateful smile, one that stretches across the cheeks, and in her hand was an envelope. I immediately resisted the envelope, insisting that whatever was inside was unnecessary. As if she expected my reaction, she had a clever response stating, "It's not for you." That caught my interest and I accepted the token of appreciation. Inside the envelope was a beautiful sentiment, which made my day and unexpectedly someone else's too. She had honored me with the task of giving a Burger King gift card to someone who could use it. I chose to give it to Timothy, a homeless man in his early 20's. I've never initiated a discussion with a homeless person before, ...

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood…Won’t You Be My (COVID) Neighbor?

Since the dawn of time, humans have formed communities so that they can feel a sense of belonging. Afterall, you are the sum of the people around you.  We want to surround ourselves with value-driven people who make a positive impact on society. We rely on this group through good and bad times . During this pandemic , social distancing can easily weaken our community and conversely, staying connected to our community will enhance our ability to be resilient. Throughout these ‘cloudy’ weeks, one of my best friends, Alissa Plungis and her family, have been leading an effort to ‘brighten’ their community in thoughtful ways.  Each week, they have a different way to give back.  “Take a Toy, Spread Some Joy” (Can you tell Alissa works in Marketing?) – keeping a bucket-full of toys including bubbles and kites, for other neighborhood kids. The neighborhood even set up a table of community resources to share. It’s empowering when everyone feels like they have a place to mak...

Spreading Love, One Sandwich At a Time

For those of us who have volunteered at a soup kitchen, we can identify with the humbling experience of serving a hot meal for the homeless. It's an opportunity to view life from the perspective of others and for some, nutrition is more challenging to sustain.  The pandemic has left the homeless more vulnerable than ever. The nightly shelter population has risen to peak levels increasing risk of transmission of the deadly virus. With fewer pedestrians roaming the streets, panhandling wages are likely at their  lowest. Lastly, most soup kitchens have closed due to lack of food and volunteers.  Mahera and I were approached to collaborate with a group of friends on a good deed of preparing homemade pre-packaged meals for  C.H.I.P.S. , a Soup Kitchen that is temporarily closed, but still feeding the homeless. We jumped on the opportunity and put our kids on the PB&J assembly line hoping to make someone’s day better.  It is fascinati...

Firefighters to the rescue in 'The War Against COVID-19'

Noah Mueller and the rest of FDNY are being dispatched daily to respond to COVID-19 house call cases. Many of these individuals are fighting for their last breath and require CPR. It's an unprecedented calling and first responders are risking infection of the deadly virus with limited personal protection equipment available. It is no surprise, Noah and the FDNY, are seizing the opportunity to save lives, regardless of the extreme conditions of this pandemic. A couple years ago, I remember asking Noah to share a hero story from his 10+ years as a NYC firefighter. True to the firehouse culture,  refused to accept recognition of heroism and   instictually responded  with a sarcastic story about saving a cat. Firefigthers run towards danger which is an admirable testimant to these brave Frontliners during this pandemic. Mahera and I would like to collaborate on a  fundraiser  where all contributions go to Noah's firehouse "nosh fund" (firehouse meals su...

Saluting the Backline of 'The War Against COVID-19'

In my last post , we honored the Frontline Workers for their call of duty. Today, we pay respect to their significant others on the "Backline" that have to keep it all together at home. These individuals are forced to maintain work responsibilities remotely while homeschooling their kids, cooking, cleaning and somehow managing to stay sane with out complaining. Theses individuals are the foundation for our brave Frontline Workers and deserves an applause for stepping up. Mahera and I were bewildered by our neighbor who is juggling the Backline responsibilities with 3 kids, while his spouse is working at the hospital.  We couldn't help but recoginize his circumstances. In order to alleviate their burden of weekend meal prep, the Khanshab family put our chef hats on and made homemade pizzas. It felt great to get the kids involved and contribute to our community. It only took a few ingrediants and some helping hands to make someone's day that much better. In...

Saluting the Frontline of 'The War Against COVID-19'

On April 8, 2017, my son Ilyaas Khanshab, was born. No one could predict my family would be celebrating his 3rd birthday via a virtual hangout. It's a strange new world we live in.  In the middle of singing "Happy Birthday" along with our quarantined family, I looked up and  saw my brother, covered in personal protection equipment from the clinic, my first thought was nuclear warfare. I t was at this moment I internalizd the severity of my brother treating COVID-19 patients at a Garwood, NJ Urgent Care. Frontline workers have been unexpectedly drafted 'to war' and are risking their lives to protect humanity from this deadly virus. I'm deeply proud and appreciative of my brother, Ali Asgher Khanshab, and all other essential workers for their selfless contribution in fighting     COVID-19. My wife, Mahera Khanshab, and I felt the urge to show our appreciation to my brother and all his collegues at the UCHA Care Center. With support and contribution fro...

A Good Deed To Recognize A Hardworking Tailor in Mumbai, India

Robert, our family tailor in India, provides a service that leaves a lasting impression. When it comes to sewing, he can fix anything within a quick turnaround and for a fair price. He makes the customer feel like his top priority and every interaction is complimented with a genuine smile. Robert is the kind of worker that I admire, embodying characteristics of passion, work ethic, mastery and simplicity. Robert has a moderate workshop, crammed behind a stairwell in a building lost in a non-commercial gully off the main road. His business stood the test of time and has grown organically through word of mouth of his superior craft. While in India, Mahera Khanshab and I felt the urge to provide Robert with some unconditional recognition, so we made him a sign for his store, simply because we thought he deserved it. I’m sharing this story with the intent to be a motivational catalyst for others to provide good deeds. If this story has inspired you to do a good deed, I want to know and...

In Memory of Dear Christina Saragaglia

I want to thank everyone who participated in the fundraiser for  Christina Saragaglia . It has been an amazing effort that we should feel proud of.  I remember waking up in the middle of the night  staring at the ceiling thinking about  Christina and her family.  I  was apprehensive to the idea of reaching out to the community in search of support for this cause.  I went with my gut feeling and the community response was an overwhelming positive energy during a time of unexplicable grief. In just a few days, together we raised a total of $6,571 for the Saragaglia Family. It is evident how much Stina is loved and also how much she will be missed. God bless America. I miss your laugh. Motivation Catalyst Outcome: $6K Donated to Family United community for a positive contribution

A Philosophy Becomes Reality (Trip of a Lifetime)

Introduction Blog Post from Trip of a Lifetime My objective for this blog is to provide perspective on an exciting journey Mahera and I will be embarking on for the next 6 weeks. We will be traveling through Belize, Ecuador, Galapagos Islands and India. In Belize we will be staying 8 miles due east off the coast on a secluded island (3 acres) for 8 days. We will be learning to dive and exploring the third largest coral reef in the world. The remainder of time is allocated for relaxation, mental cleansing, introspection, reading, kayaking and swimming. After rejuvenating in Belize we will head towards Ecuador to spend a couple nights soaking up some culture before leaving for an ambitious 8 day trip to Galapagos Islands. We will be aboard a 20 person Yacht, island hoping for an opportunity to get up close and personal with fascinating wildlife including birds, turtles, iguanas and penguins to name a few. Strengthening a Community- www.bohranetwork.com

I wanted to take the opportunity to create the first blog for this site. I'm not much of a blogger myself, but the creation of Bohra Network is an interesting story that I wanted to share. Making Bohra Network has been a unique experience. It started with an idea and a light hearted conversation that eventually became reality.   I've realized that brainstorming innovative ideas is a lot more fun then actually pursing them. When it is all said and done, the process was much underestimated. We all have creative ambitious ideas, but pursuing them is always more difficult then it sounds. Factors such as; time, money, energy, risk and priorities make exploring these outside the box ideas challenging. Throughout this whole project managing all these factors have been indeed exhausting. The hours have been beyond what we have expected. Having minimal experience with social networking sites made making decisions almost trial and error. We made many discouraging mistakes along th...
